Material Life

So I recently had an experience that resulted in me coming to a few harsh realizations.

The Background: My wallet fell out of my pocket at a Cookstown McDonald’s and I didn’t realize it until I got to Guelph. And a whole process was engaged to get my wallet back.

The Realizations:

Wallets are important.
I really should check my pockets more often. Especially when I feel jerks on them as I am getting in the car.
Despite my firm belief that the measure of a man (or a woman for that matter) should be determined by his (or her) heart and mind, society will judge me by appearances, by material culture–and unfortunately a large part of that criteria is in my wallet.

The Questions:

Why is it that a mere material object holds my entire position in society in its bowels?
How can our society have gone so wrong that we are judged on such a flimsy basis?

The Vow:

To do my best to change the basis on which we are judged!

  1. The fact that it contains all my id, money, and access to money. Which seems to be how position in society is determined. Think of what you need to buy alcohol, buy lottery tickets, vote, go to school, be recognized as a student, etc. It all adds up.
