Favorite Quotations

I often post quotations on Facebook but here’s a list of my favorite quotations from all sources except songs (because there’s far too many good quotations to include from songs):

Anne McCaffery—Dragonflight Introduction:

When is a legend a legend? Why is a myth a myth? How old and disused must a fact be for it to be relegated to the category “Fairy-tale”? And why do certain facts remain incontrovertible while others lose their validity to assume a shabby, unstable character?

Lessa, from Dragonflight:

Living was struggling to do something impossible—to succeed, or die, knowing you had tried!

Capiam, from Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern:

When bad fortune occurs, the unresourceful, unimaginative man looks about him to attach the blame to someone else; the resolute accepts misfortune and endeavours to survive, mature, and improve because of it.

Brom, from the Eragon movie:

That’s the spirit—one part brave, three parts fool

Albus Dumbledore, from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban movie:
Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.

Sirius Black, from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie:

We’ve all got both light and dark inside of us. What matters is the part we choose to act on.

Anne McCaffery paraphrasing Robert Browning, “Bishop Blougram’s Apology”:

Ours not to ponder what were fair in Life
But, finding what may be,
Make it fair up to our means”

Hamlet, Act IV, scene ii:
There’s a divinity that shapes our ends,
Rough-hew them how we will.

Ecclesiastes 3:1:
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven”

Max Weber:

It is not age that matters but rather the trained ability to look at the realities of life unsparingly, to bear up under those realities, and to be equal to them inwardly.

Dr. Boyce:

A man either lives life as it happens to him, meets it head on and licks it or he turns his back on it and starts to wither away.

James T. Kirk:

Above all else a god needs compassion
I don’t want my pain taken away! I need my pain!
Death, destruction, disease, horror. That’s what war is all about…That’s what makes it a thing to be avoided.
We can admit that we’re killers, but we’re not going to kill today. That’s all it takes.

Spock:

I neither enjoy the idea of command nor am I frightened of it. It simply exists.
I’m not interested in the opinion of the majority
If there are self-made purgatories, then we all have to live in them. Mine can be no worse than someone else’s.

Qui-Gon Jinn, in Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace:

“Your focus determines your reality”

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season One Motifs:

Most powerful is he who controls his own power
Fear is a disease, hope is its only cure
A single chance is a galaxy of hope

Pernicar, in Star Wars: Darth Bane: Path of Destruction:

There is no shame in falling. There is only shame if you refuse to rise once again.

Padme Amidala, in Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season One:

There’s always a choice.

Obi-Wan Kenobi, in Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope:

Let go your conscious self and act on instinct.
Your eyes can deceive you. Don’t trust them

Obi-Wan Kenobi, in Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi:

You will find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.

Yoda, in Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back:

Do or do not. There is no try.
Size matters not.
