I love several fictional series: Star Wars, Star Trek, Dragonriders of Pern, Harry Potter, and NCIS among them. I’ve often said I love all of them equally, but I’ve come to realize in recent years that as much as I love all of them, I actually love Star Wars the best.
There are a few reasons why I love Star Wars the most. First, is that it’s set “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away”. This automatically gives it a certain freedom to comment on events on our world in our time, without being constrained by them. Second, is the role of the Force in providing an element of spirituality–as a Christian, having the Force involved gives it a relatibility that a lot of other fictional series don’t have. Third, Star Wars also has room for people who are slow to romance. Most of the Jedi are forbidden to have relationships in the movies, and in the Legends books, comics and video games while there are Jedi who have romantic relationships, there’s also Jedi who either don’t have romantic relationships or face struggles with romance that are relatable to someone who feels so very different. Finally, Star Wars also has the most commentary to offer and that I agree with on dealing with my disabilities and disadvantages.
So while I will always love many fictional series, Star Wars comes first.
