Poem: Fallen Once More

It has happened again
Despite all my best efforts;
Despite all my
Self-made promises
I have fallen once more.
My heart aches
With unrequited love.
A love I know I can’t confess;
A love I know I must let go.
I know how this story ends;
I despair of how
To keep it from happening again.
I cry out to the Lord:
“Oh God!
Spare me from this pain!
I can’t face it again.”
She answers me,
“My child,
You know the truth:
You cannot shut off
The pain of love
Without also shutting off
The joy of love.
And though at night
You cry out to me
Begging not to let you wake
A part of you
Always holds onto hope.
Hope for love;
For a happy ending to this story.
This part of you
I cannot snuff out
It gives you strength to keep loving
To bear the pain.
So keep on walking, my beloved,
Trust your feelings
Live in the moment
My Spirit will guide you on.”
I sigh,
And laugh inwardly.
Resolute,
I keep walking
Heart open fully
To love.
