Poem: Friends

Friends

Friends are important
Maybe that is why it hurts
So much more when they
Seemingly betray you

You laugh, joke
Cry with them
You try to fit in
And still be true
To yourself

They are the golden standard
You want to be them
There comes a time
When you must choose
Between being yourself
And someone
You are not

It is a choice no one should have to make
But it is made anyway
By billions of beings
Every day

When you choose to imitate
You end up playing pretend
For the rest of your life
Yet you fit in

It is when you
Choose to be yourself
That you face
Your hardest challenge
Yet then you make
True friends
