Poem: My Girl

When I first met her
She melted into my chest
As I held her in my arms;
I knew then
I would be taking her home.
The first months we spent together
Were more difficult than I ever imagined.
We taught each other new skills
I nursed her through illness
And we played together
Growing an unbreakable bond.
At night, she would always lay with me
Taking comfort in my presence.
8 months on,
We are more independent
But deeply in love.
She cries when I’m absent
And tells me what she needs;
I take pleasure in providing for her
In playing with her & caressing her;
Her hair is black & silky
And meticulously clean.
She takes comfort in my smell
Holds my sweat-marked shirts close
And lays with me in the early morning light.
I knew for a long time
Before I found her
That I wanted a kitten in my life;
What I didn’t realize
Was how much I would learn and grow
With my beautiful black cat.
I look forward to many more years
Of being her Dad.
