The Bible
Do not judge so that you may not be judged. For with the judgment you make you will be judged and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck in your neighbour’s eye? Or how can you say to your neighbour, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye’, while the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbour’s eye. (Matthew 7:1-5)
“In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 7:12)
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many deeds of power in your name?’ Then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; go away from me, you evildoers.’ (Matthew 7:21-23)
See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” (Matthew 10:16)
He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” (Mark 8:34)
But Jesus said, “Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us if for us.” (Mark 9:39-41)
But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you.
If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, do good and lend, expect nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your father is merciful. (Luke 6:27-36)
Do not judge, and you will not be be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back. (Luke 6:37-38)
But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him; for whoever is not against you is for you”. (Luke 9:50)
From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded. (Luke 12:48b)
Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment. (John 7:24)
Therefore you have no excuse, whoever you are, when you judge others; for in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, are doing the very same things. You say “We know that God’s judgment on those who do such things is in accordance with the truth.” Do you imagine, whoever you are, that when you judge those who do such things and yet do them yourself, you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you despite the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience? Do you not realize that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? But by your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. For he will repay according to each one’s deeds: to those who by patiently doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; while for those who are self-seeking and who obey not the truth by wickedness there will be wrath and fury. There will be anguish and distress for everyone who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality. (Romans 2:1-11)
What then are we to say? Should we continue to sin in order that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? (Romans 6:1-2)
Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of saints; extend hospitality to strangers. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” No, “if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:9-21)
Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet” and any other commandment are summed up in this word, “Love your neighbour as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law. (Romans 13:8-10)
Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. (1 Corinthians 13:4-7)
And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13)
By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. (Galatians 5:22-23)
Doctor Who
CLARA: You’re going to help me?
THE DOCTOR: Well, why wouldn’t I help you?
C: Because of what I just did. I just —
D: You betrayed me. You betrayed my trust. You betrayed our friendship. You betrayed everything…you let me down!
C: Then why are you helping me?
D: Why? Do you think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?
– The Doctor and Clara in “Dark Waters” from Series 8
Winning? Is that what you think it’s about? I’m not trying to win. I’m not doing this because I want to beat someone, or because I hate someone, or because I want to blame someone. It’s not because it’s fun. God knows it’s not because it’s easy. It’s not even because it works, because it hardly ever does. I do what I do because it’s right! Because it’s decent! And above all, it’s kind! It’s just that. Just kind.
-The Doctor in “The Doctor Falls” from Series 10
Never be cruel, never be cowardly, and never ever eat pears! Remember, hate is always foolish, but love is always wise. Always try to be nice, but never fail to be kind.

-The Doctor in “Twice Upon A Time”
It [hope] doesn’t just offer itself up. You have to use your imagination. Imagine the solution and work to make it a reality. Whole worlds pivot on acts of imagination.
– The Doctor in “Tsuranga Conundrum” from Series 11
You want to me to tell you that the Earth’s going to be okay? Cos I can’t. In your time, humanity is busy arguing over the washing-up while the house burns down. Unless people face facts and change, catastrophe is coming. But it’s not decided. You know that. The future is not fixed. It depends on billions of decisions, and actions, and people stepping up. Humans. I think you forget how powerful you are. Lives change worlds. People can save planets, or wreck them. That’s the choice. Be the best of humanity.
-The Doctor in “Orphan 55” from Series 11
Because something seems impossible. We try—it doesn’t work. We try again. We learn, we improve, we fail again, but better. We make friends, we learn to trust. We help each other. We get things wrong again. We improve together, then ultimately we succeed. Because this is what being alive is, and it’s better than the alternative. So come on, you brilliant humans! We go again, and we win.

P: I’m 100% sure. It’s like, um, Tale of Two Cities.
H: Okay, you lost me.
P: Yeah, Charles Dickens did not write, “It was the best of times and everything was awesome”. You know, I mean, without “the worst of times,” we wouldn’t have I don’t know…poetry, wouldn’t have sad songs, wouldn’t have anything that makes us appreciate “the best of times”. Stars can’t shine without darkness. No one is immune to suffering. No one. But the good news is, people like you and me? We can handle it.
H: We can?
P: Heck yeah! We work hard to keep shining.

-Augywne Djo in Star Wars: The Courtship of Princess Leia by Dave Wolverton
It’s called the gray fallacy. One person says white, another says black, and outsider observers assume gray is the truth. The assumption of gray is sloppy, lazy thinking. The fact that one person takes a position that is diametrically opposed to the truth does not skew reality so the truth is no longer the truth. The truth is still the truth.

Jedi apprentice Corran Horn: It all down to the nature of evil, doesn’t it? Evil is selfishness, while good is selfless. If I take an action that benefits me, only me, and hurts others, I am evil. If I do what must be done to prevent harm to others, if I become the buffer between them and evil, then my actions will be good.
Trustant Elegos A’kla: Your intentions will be good. Without consideration and forethought, however, your actions could still be evil. That is the problem, of course, evil is always easy and resisting it is never so. Evil is relentless; and anyone, if they tire, if they are not vigilant, can fall prey to it.
C: And there are situations where opposing evil may result in harm coming to the innocent.
E: It does happen, yes. Life is not without pain, but life concerns itself with how we handle that pain, or joy, or confusion or triumph. Life is more than time passing before death, it is the sum and total of all we make of it. Decisions may not be easy, but many is the time when not making a decision, not taking an action is worse than a poor decision. Evil flourishes where it is not opposed, and those who are able to oppose it must protect those who cannot protect themselves.

-Jedi apprentice Jacen Solo in Star Wars: The New Jedi Order: Traitor by Matthew Stover
More than through anger or lust for power, the dark enters through despair. Through the belief that, in the end, there is nothing but pain and sorrow and death, and that nothing we do truly matters. I’m here to tell you that we do matter. And that despair is an illusion that the dark casts before our eyes.

It matters. It matters which side we choose. Even if there will never be more light than darkness. Even if there can be no more joy in the galaxy than there is pain.
