You lie there, beautiful and angelic
An eternal laugh
On your glowing face
Your having a grand old time
Giggling like a sprite
Alien devices monitor you
As you fight for life
Your family worries about you
Tears and cries ring through the night!
You lie there, in blissful ignorance, that you fight for life
Author’s Note: This was a poem written shortly after I learned my niece, who was 3 at the time, was diagnosed with leukemia. It was written in a high school English class and marked the real start of my use of poetry as a way to wrestle with anxiety, depression, and more.
