Poem: How Far I’ve Come

I have come so far
From the dark days of youth
Survived the pain and loss
Joy and love
That defined my adolescence
I have matured
Into a man worthy of respect
A far cry from the uncertain child I once was
I have been guided through my years
By feelings that cannot be ignored
That were with me since I can remember
That guide my actions still
That will lead me to my death
I have done so much
Overcome my greatest fears
My body’s weakness
Defied the opinions of experts
Refused to listen to those who said
It could not be done
True I have been aided
Helped along the way
But in the eyes of God
I triumph or not
On my merits alone
There are those who try to put me down
To put lie to their words
All I need to do is recall
Where I was a few short years ago
I have come so far
Done so much
I still have far to go
