Poem: Brothers, Dear

You may put me down
Spin me around
Break my backbone
Undermine the ground
That I’m standing on
Crack jokes at my expense
Mock me and scorn me
Constantly examine me
Aggressively question me
But I warn you now
I’m not as weak
As you seem to think
I’m not the fool
That you think I am
I’m stronger than you know
Wiser than you see
My strength and my wisdom
Doesn’t meet your definition
Yet that doesn’t mean
It ceases to be
 I can’t take it anymore!
The pain and the heartbreak
That springs from your thinking
That only your path is the right one
That the only strength is your strength
The only knowledge is your knowledge
And I declare it isn’t so
For really you should know
That just because I’m different from you
Doesn’t mean I’m inferior to you
I see clearly now
That too long have I
Let my feelings come before my purpose
Softening or hardening my stance
In an attempt to make you see
The true side of me
I declare now
No longer will I do so
It’s time to put my purpose
Before everything else
And by so doing
Reveal my light for all to see
So now brothers dear
It’s time to face me
Know that I will not
Take your punches any longer
God is telling me
That it is a time for change
And now I know my purpose
You will see the true me
Brought forth in glorious majesty
So brothers dear, ponder this
I know what I’m for
Do you?
