Fan Poetry: Dragonriders of Pern

Note: This is the first in a series of poems for a variety of fandoms that I’ve written over the years. These poems are related to the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne and Todd McCaffrey. The final poem in this collection is a poem I wrote upon the death of Anne McCaffrey, the creator of the Dragonriders of Pern series, and one of my favorite authors.

Impression

The humming starts,
A sign that it’s about to happen.
You can’t help but wonder
If today will be your lucky day.
Fear, anxiety, anticipation
All swirl within,
As you step out onto the Sands.
You’re robed in white,
your feet are bare and hot.
Yet you forget such trivial things.
Your heart pounds,
Your skin is covered in sweat,
Yet you are calm.
Now is the time,
You succeed, or not
Only the dragons will know.
The humming reaches a crescendo;
An egg suddenly shatters.
You hope beyond hope that the bronze is yours…
You are disappointed,
But then several eggs shatter at once:
There are crooning dragonets,
Young lucky humans milling around.
You
Stand
Silent
Alone
Then you feel the brush of contact,
And some primal instinct urges you to look down
And there you see,
Rainbow eyes!
You are lost in the glittering regard,
You feel love, pain, the whole gamut of emotions.
You know you will never be without companionship ever again.
And then you hear a voice.
It tells you a name.
You and your dragon,
Are now together
Forever.

Mating Flight

You hear a cry.
You reach for the mind of your dragon,
Automatically,
On instinct.
You are startled.
Your dragon is wild, raw, untamed.
Ready,
To mate.
You rush to her,
She is beyond reassurance,
You must command her,
To blood.
She fights,
Yet yields,
To your command,
And then she flies.
You are now her.
You are with her,
In glorious exultation.
Flying.
You dart, and dodge,
Enjoy the race
Until only three males
Remain.
Then one catches you,
You try to escape,
Yet can’t.
The mating begins.
You let go,
Rejoicing in love,
You are with another,
And with your dragon
You let the passions take you,
All the way home.
Goodbye Dragonlady
Oh Dragonlady
I mourn your passing
Oh Dragonlady
I rejoice your gift to me
You gave me light
In the darkest of times
You helped me grow
From boy to man
You showed me
More than any other
How to become
Who I wanted to be
Your legacy will guide me
As long as I live
And I shall pass it on
Oh Dragonlady
You gave me much
Oh Dragonlady
I hope we finally meet

In the lands beyond the final journey
