Poem: My Love Is Like Jesus

My love is like Jesus.
Lots of friends
But no partners;
Lots of folks who love me,
Believe in me
But no lovers.
My love is like Jesus.
Topsy-turvey
Upside down
Full of hope.
People say my love
Will never happen,
Is unrealistic;
Right idea,
Wrong time.
“Let it go”
They advise,
“Or someone will get hurt.”
My love is like Jesus.
Inviting all the wrong people
Maybe too quick to embrace pain
Maybe too quick to self-sacrifice.
My love is like Jesus.
I try to crucify it,
Bury it,
Seal it in a tomb.
Figure if I can just stop
Yearning for love
My loneliness will cease;
The pain will stop;
I will be free.
My love is like Jesus.
It just won’t die;
Every time I bury it
It breaks free again
More powerful than ever.
My love is like Jesus.
As much as I fight it
It makes me a better man.
My love is like Jesus.
Amen.
