Poem: We Take What Is Given

There is it again.
A pang in my heart;
A well of despair.
“We take what is given”,
I think.
Took me a while
To understand that phrase.
A call to resiliency
A declaration of hope
For better days to come.
Not a statement of greed and arrogance.
Yet oh!
How hard it is
To take what is given
when what is given
Is constant loneliness.
Always to refrain from embracing
To let go of those I love.
“Oh Lord!”
I cry,
“How long must this last?
I know not how much longer I can bear this burden.
Please, Spirit,
Guide me to my lover soon.

Author’s Note: The phrase “We take what is given” is a repeated quote of the Skywalker family in the Star Wars: Legacy comics, published by Dark Horse.
